Academics

SPAN 3012: Survey of Latin American Literature (3 credit hours)

This course serves as an introduction to contemporary Argentinian women writers and the context in which they live(d). We will read a selection of literature from a variety of genres (essay, poetry, short story, novel) in order to analyze the themes and topics most important to these writers. We will also study the role of these writers, and that of Argentinian women in general, within a changing Argentinian society throughout the 20th and 21st century. This course will also study iconic Argentinian women like Eva Perón and the Madres de la Plaza de Mayo. While in Argentina, students will participate in a variety of learning experiences, including but not limited to: a literary tour of bookstores in Buenos Aires, a visit to writer Victoria Ocampo’s home, a visit to the ESMA Museum and Site of Memory (memorializing the desaparecidos from the Dirty War), a chance to drink coffee in the famous and literary Café Tortoni, an opportunity to watch the Madres de la Plaza de Mayo march in front of the Casa Rosada, and a visit to the Museo Evita. Students will also participate in a variety of cultural activities to increase their understanding of Argentine culture (a visit to a working ranch), food (cooking class), arts (tango show), and nature (trip to the Perito Moreno glacier). Through these immersive activities, students will gain a greater understanding and appreciation of Argentine culture, history, and literature, particularly the role of women writers in 20th and 21st-century Argentine literature.

Pre-requisite Span 3004 or equivalent and instructor consent required to be considered as a participant on this program. This course will be used for Spanish Major/Minor credit. Participation in this program requires several class meetings during the Fall semester, although the course is scheduled as a winter session course. The Study Abroad Center will enroll participants in the course. Please contact the program's course leader for more information on academic requirements.

Itinerary

Tentative Program Dates: December 31st, 2025 (depart) to January 15th, 2025 (return)

Sample itinerary is subject to change.

Day 1: Depart the US on overnight flight to Buenos Aires.

Day 2: Arrive in Buenos Aires in the morning. Coach transfer to hotel. Enjoy the Argentina Experience for Lunch, followed by a walk through the Jardín Botánico Carlos Thays and the Jardín Japonés.

Day 3: Visit the Museo Histórico Nacional in the morning. After a group lunch, partake in a guided walking tour of the city.

Day 4: Enjoy a walking book and author tour of the city, beginning at the Biblioteca Nacional and ending at El Ateneo Grand Splendid. Enjoy a group lunch in Pasaje del Correo then visit the Recoleta Cemetery in the afternoon.

Day 5: To start the day, enjoy a relaxing walk through the Caminito neighborhood, renowned for its colorful houses and lively tango atmosphere. Walk through the San Telmo market. After lunch, take a historic El Zanjón de Granados tour, followed by a walk through Galerías Pacífico shopping center. In the evening, enjoy a show at Teatro Colon, one of the world's most famous opera houses.

Day 6: Enjoy a day trip to an Argentinian farm, known for horseback riding and bird watching.

Day 7: Enjoy a day trip via bus to San Isidro to see the Villa Ocampo house, the former residence of Victoria Ocampo, one of Argentina’s greatest cultural figures.

Day 8: Partake in a mate class where you will get to paint a mate cup and learn about one of the most important elements of Argentine culture. Afterwards, visit the ESMA Museum and Site of Memory. Enjoy dinner in the evening, followed by a tango show in the very city the dance originated.

Day 9: Visit the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano in the morning. After a delectable lunch at Cafe Tortoni, visit Casa Rosada, or ‘the pink house’, where the sitting president works, located in Plaza de Mayo. At 3:30, watch the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo march, a ceremonial daily protest demanding the return of children who disappeared during Argentina’s military dictatorship. At night, fly to Calafate.

Day 10: To start off the day you will visit the Glaciarium Patagonian Ice Museum and learn about the area's rich history with glaciers and ice. This will be followed by a chance to cruise around the water and enjoy a glacier boat tour

Day 11: Guided hike on Perito Moreno Glacier, the most famous attraction in all of Patagonia. Following this, visit the Laguna Nimez Reserve.

Day 12: Choose between either a free day to relax and enjoy the natural wonders of Calafate, or an additional hike to El Chalten accompanied by a guide.

Day 13: Fly back to Buenos Aires in the morning. Visit the Museo Evita, dedicated to the life of Eva Peron, former first lady of Argentina. At night, attend a Planetarium Show at Galileo Galilei.

Day 14: Enjoy a day trip to Colonia de Sacramento in Uruguay via ferry. It is one of the country's oldest towns.

Day 15: Partake in a traditional Argentine cooking class to learn about the country's rich culture and history surrounding food. Coach transfer to airport.

Day 16: Arrive home.

*Special Note: This program is very active and will require several miles of walking each day.

Housing & Meals

Students will stay in hotels arranged by the Study Abroad Center while abroad. The cost of these hotels are included in the "Program Cost" line item of the program cost estimate. A few meals are built into the "Program Cost". Students will pay for the remaining meals out-of-pocket while traveling and are encouraged to try the local foods.
