Participant Eligibility

The Study Abroad Center reserves the right to determine participants' eligibility to study abroad. Students must have a completed study abroad application, including supportive recommendation form(s).

Additionally, students must meet all of the following in order to be eligible to study abroad:

  • Must be over the age of 18 years old
  • Must be in good standing with the university
  • Must meet the course prerequisites
  • Have a cumulative 2.5 GPA or higher at the time of application and maintain this cumulative GPA prior to departure and throughout the study abroad process
  • If the student’s cumulative GPA is lower than 2.5, they can request an exception. Exceptions are not guaranteed. To request this, the student must submit the following to the Study Abroad Center (103 East Bartlett):
    • Letter of reference from your academic advisor supporting the pursuit of study abroad.
    • Please note, the following:
      • Providing this letter does not guarantee acceptance into the program and is in addition to the recommendation forms that were completed on the program application. This is because these forms do not require details or elaboration -- they simply prompt the respondent to answer questions.
      • The letter will be used to make a decision on whether to waive the GPA requirement, so they should include information supporting an exception to be made on the student’s behalf, such as context and steps being made for improving the GPA.
      • If applying for a faculty-led study abroad program, the faculty leader will be part of the decision-making process.
  • UNI's partner institutions may require additional eligibility requirements to be met, these vary from institution to institution. Please consult with the Study Abroad Center staff to discuss these additional requirements, if applicable.
  • Applicants traveling to a region of a country or a country with an overall Travel Advisory Level 3 (Reconsider Travel) or 4 (Do Not Travel) will not be eligible.
  • Prior to an acceptance decision, students may be requested to meet with Study Abroad Center staff and campus partners.
  • Applicants must adhere to the Conditions of Participation from the time of acceptance throughout the duration of the study abroad program. By signing the Conditions of Participation, you agree to actively participate in the preparatory process and attend all required meetings, as well as agree to all academic, behavioral, and administrative requirements. Failure to abide by the Conditions of Participation may result in the Study Abroad Center rescinding the study abroad offer.
