Faculty-led Program in Ireland (Prof. Collins)

Students in this program will experience the beauty and unique culture of Ireland. They will examine the relationship between a culture and its legal system, and the importance of intercultural understanding. While abroad, students will experience the “Emerald Isle” through visits to libraries, museums, prisons, and courts, as well as excursions to Northern Ireland, Killarney, and the famous Blarney Castle, among other sites.

Professor Collins has visited Ireland numerous times, and has led student experiences there, including a semester-long course. He loves sharing his passion for the land of his ancestors, and looks forward to taking students to this fascinating country again next summer

Academics

BUS 2100: Global Skills (3 credit hours)

This course can fulfill a variety of credit options, such as UNIFI elective and UNIFI Human Condition Global category credit.

Ireland has a rich and complex history and culture, and its people have had a profound influence on the world, including the United States. The interdisciplinary nature of the course incorporates a variety of learning experiences, including but not limited to: cultural readings, lectures, presentations, class discussions, and tours of iconic cultural and historical sites. These experiences will allow students to examine culture’s role in an individual identity and reality formation. Students will explore Ireland primarily through a study of its legal system, with the objective of reaching a greater understanding of its cultural and historic diversity, culminating in a cultural and legal comparison between Ireland and the U.S.

The Study Abroad Center will enroll participants in their study abroad course.

Participation in this program requires several class meetings throughout the spring semester, although the course is scheduled for the summer. Please contact the program's course leader for more information on academic requirements.

NOTES:

Students planning to participate in the spring commencement ceremony in May can enroll in this summer term program, however, their degree will not be conferred until the end of the summer term and is contingent on the successful completion of the program and all required coursework.
Students attending colleges and universities other than ��are welcome to participate in this program. If you are not currently a ��student, but would like to participate in this program, please contact the ��Study Abroad Center prior to starting your program application.

Itinerary

Tentative Program Dates: Monday, May 26 - Sunday, June 8, 2025. (Dates do not include travel to/from destination)

Sample itinerary is subject to change.

Day 1: Students arrive in Dublin; check-in; group dinner in evening.

Day 2: Tour of Dublin; including Kilmainham Gaol, a former prison that held Irish revolutionaries.

Day 3: Tour of Trinity College with entrance to Book of Kells and Old Library.

Day 4: Travel to Blarney Castle; then to Killarney.

Day 5: Free day in Killarney.

Day 6: Return to Dublin.

Day 7: Visit Phoenix Park, St. Stephen's Green, and Grafton Street in Dublin.

Day 8: Visit the Four Courts, the center of Ireland’s judicial system.

Day 9: Travel to Belfast via County Meath.

Day 10: Sightseeing tour of Belfast; return to Dublin.

Day 11: Another visit to the Four Courts, including witnessing a trial and an Irish Supreme Court session.

Day 12: Visit the Dail Eirann (the Irish parliament); Guinness Tour.

Day 13: Free day in Dublin; final group dinner.

Day 14: Departure.

Students will stay in hotel or hostel-style rooms arranged by the Study Abroad Center and paid for before departure. Only a few meals abroad are included in the program cost. Students are encouraged to try the local foods.
