Employees and students are responsible for ensuring they have taken the necessary steps before undertaking any UNI-sponsored international travel. Please see the processes outlined below.
Student Travel
Students traveling outside of the programs administered by the Study Abroad Center (e.g., through School of Music, International Student Teaching, Athletics and others) must use this Travel Registry to provide their travel information.
Please note that all students traveling abroad regardless of the type of program are required to purchase international health and travel coverage specified by the ²ÝÁñÉçÇøStudy Abroad Center. International health insurance and emergency services through Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI) provides covÂerÂage for University of Northern Iowa students, faculty and staff traveling internationally. An exception will be given to non-²ÝÁñÉçÇøstudent that have a health/security insurance covered by their home institution. If you have questions about mandatory coverage, feel free to contact the Study Abroad Center.

Faculty & Staff Traveling on ²ÝÁñÉçÇøBusiness/Activity
Employees are responsible for ensuring they have taken the necessary steps before undertaking any UNI-sponsored international travel. This includes submitting a trip in Service Hub, getting enrolled in the CISI health insurance, enrolling in U.S. Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, addressing IT-Security and export control concerns, and seeking ITOC approval if required.

The Study Abroad Center enrolls all faculty and staff traveling internationally on ²ÝÁñÉçÇøbusiness and activity into the mandatory CISI international health insurance ().
- The first step would be to create a Travel Request in .
- Once you have created a travel request, OBO's team will produce a "spend authorization" in WorkDay. With this information, the Study Abroad Center is then looped in by their team and will then reach out to you to get the necessary information to enroll you in the CISI insurance.
- With this, we will need you to verify your official dates (in case they differ from those entered into the Service Hub) and obtain a copy of your passport.
- We recommend enrolling participants at least 30 days prior to departure and will do so once your trip is approved and you have confirmed travel dates.

- If you plan to take technology with you abroad, you should work with the IT staff. Their team is also generally looped in during the Service Hub Travel Request by the OBO staff.
- Any employee traveling to a region of the world that is under a travel advisory by the U.S. Department of State of either Level 3 (Reconsider Travel) or Level 4 (Do Not Travel) will need to go through the . The ITOC will undertake a risk assessment and make a recommendation to the employee’s division head regarding if the travel request should be approved or denied.
